For your 2002 Ford Ranger with the Flareside or Stepside bed, I recommend the Draw-Tite Class III Max Frame Receiver Hitch # 75082. This Class III hitch is confirmed to fit your truck and will use existing holes in the vehicle frame to ease the installation process. Just note that the full size spare tire may not be able to be stored underneath the truck after the hitch is installed.
I have attached the complete installation instructions that you can use for reference.
If you plan on doing some towing and your Ford Ranger does not have a factory connector, I recommend the Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118344. This custom harness will install by connecting directly to the factory ports behind the driver and passenger side tail lights. This will provide you with a 4-Way connector to connect with and power a trailer's signal lights.
If you also need a ball mount, I have included an article that explains how to choose the best one for your setup, along with a link that will take you to our available selection.
