That's right, you cannot overcool transmission fluid. Though in the winter it will take a little longer for it to warm up. Adding a supplemental transmission cooler to your 1996 Chevy K1500 Suburban is an excellent way to help get the most life out of the transmission.
The most popular transmission cooler for your Suburban is # D13503. It measures 11 inches wide, 8-3/4 inches tall, and 7/8 of an inch deep. I also recommend hose fitting # D13035 so you don't have to cut and flare lines during the installation of the cooler.
I have included a link to a video showing installation of this cooler on a newer Suburban but the basic installation process will be the same on yours.
