Because the top mounting hooks would have to mount directly to the glass window, none of our bike rack manufacturers recommend using a trunk mount bike rack on the 2008-2012 Highlander. The rear glass is not considered strong enough to bear the weight of the rack plus the bikes that are carried upon it. Hitting a big bump or pothole with bikes attached would shatter the rear window.

I would recommend installing a receiver hitch like the Curt Class III # 13534 in conjunction with a hitch mounted bike rack, like the Swagman Titan part # S63400. The Titan is a bargain-priced rack that has features usually found on more expensive racks, like an integrated cable lock and an anti-rattle hitch pin. A locking hitch pin, # S64029 is available, as well.

For womens bikes or bikes with sharply angled top tubes or step-through frames, using a frame adapter like part # 64005 is recommended. The adapter spans the distance between the seat post and the handle bar gooseneck, and provides a level attachment point to the bike rack so the bike is not carried at an angle.
