A brake controller will have to be hardwired to your 2006 Toyota Tacoma. On the brake controller the white wire is ground and will need to be connected to the negative battery terminal. No other ground location will work. The black wire is 12 volt power and will connect to the positive battery terminal via a 30 amp circuit breaker. Blue is output to the trailer brakes. Red is input from the brake switch.

If your Tacoma does not already have a trailer connector you will start by adding a 4-Way using # 118496. If the truck already has a connector you will not need this part.

Then, to add a 7-Way if not equipped already you will need # ETBC7 which also comes with the wiring, circuit breakers, and accessories needed to complete the installation. I have included some links that show and explain the ETBC7 installation.

If the truck already has a 7-Way connector then you will only need wiring kit # 5506 and you can follow the relevant parts of the ETBC7 installation.
