Replacing Incandescent Trailer Lights with LED Equivalents

Updated 08/22/2014 | Published 08/21/2014

Question:

I am currently looking to replace my current lights with led lights. I would like to know if I can just plug the led lights in or is there anything else that needs to be done prior to changing over to led?

There is no specific preparation procedure required to change over your trailer's lighting from standard incandescent fixtures to the brighter, cooler-operating and more efficient LED types available now. LED lighting is a great way to both improve trailer visibility and reduce power demand on your tow vehicle's wiring system.

While you are going through this conversion it is a good idea to take a thorough look at your trailer's connector and wiring, from the 4-pole (or 7-way) at the trailer tongue all the way back to the light fixtures themselves. Motion and vibration of the trailer wiring from normal use can lead to wires rubbing on the trailer frame; this can sometimes cause shorts. You can check your wiring for any signs of worn or cracked insulation and repair or replace it as needed.

I have linked you to two articles on trailer wiring that may prove useful to you as you prepare for this project. I have also included a link to our main page for trailer lighting.
