What is Needed to Tow a Utility Trailer with a 2014 Honda CR-V

Question:

I have a 2014 CRV and wanted to add a mount to pull a utility trailer. Will this type of mount handle the weight of a load for the dump or even say a cord of wood? I want to make sure it is not only for bicycle mounts or something really small. Also will pulling a trailer affect the suspension or driving ability of the car if used say once a month to travel about 20 miles?

The first thing you should know is that the towing capacity of your 2014 Honda CR-V is likely 1500 pounds. Consult the vehicle owners manual to confirm. Since this is lower than the capacity of Curt trailer hitch # C13119 you will need to go by the lower capacity.

Provided the gross trailer weight when loaded and ready to tow is under the towing capacity of the vehicle you will be fine. The hitch is not just for bike racks or cargo carriers, you can tow with it, you just need to stay within the capacity of the vehicle.

The tongue weight of the trailer could potentially pull the back of the vehicle down causing issues with steering, braking, and visibility. You will need to make sure that the load is properly distributed on the trailer so the tongue weight is 10 to 15 percent of the gross trailer weight. If it sags at the back, move some weight on the trailer back.

In addition to the hitch I also recommend etrailer ball mount kit # EBMK4. It comes with a ball mount, interchangeable ball set, hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag.
