Question:
I have a 2027 Honda Pilot AWD without the factory tow package, and we're planning to tow a small travel trailer with electric brakes. I don't have a hitch or any trailer wiring installed yet. What would I need to get everything set up, including a brake controller?

Hey Jason! For your 2027 Honda Pilot AWD, I recommend the following setup to get you ready to tow your travel trailer:
-etrailer Class III Trailer Hitch Receiver # e27KR
-Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 7-Way Connector # C35ZV
-Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller with Custom Harness # RED74CR
The hitch bolts directly to your Pilot's frame, and the Curt 7-way harness plugs into the existing factory wiring behind the driver's side trim panel. It works even without the factory tow package, so you won't have to splice into the vehicle's wiring to install the 7-way.
For the brake controller, check for the factory brake controller connector under your dash. If it's there, you can use the Redarc # RED74CR with its plug and play adapter for an easier installation. If your Pilot doesn't have that connector, you need the universal hardwire version # RED52VR instead. Either way, you'll get smooth, proportional trailer braking with a small adjustment knob on your dash.
You will also need a ball mount to complete your setup. You can get an adjustable ball mount like # e66PR or you can get a fixed ball mount once you know the rise/drop you need to keep things level. I attached an article below which explains how to measure for your reference.
What travel trailer are you planning on towing?

Jason, I've got a 2024 Pilot. The hitch took around an hour to install. The wiring harness on the car side was behind the small pocket on the driver's side just inside the tailgate. It already has the correct connector for most trailers and drops through a small opening. The pigtail is long enough to reach the hitch. It was heavy to install but not difficult.

We're looking at a 2026 Jayco Jay Feather 17BH. I checked under the dash and found the brake controller connector, so I'll go with the plug-in Redarc. The adjustable ball mount sounds like a good option since we might upgrade trailers down the road.
