Can the Ivation Quick Ignite Electric Charcoal Starter Light Charcoal Without Lighter Fluid?
Published 10/31/2026 >
Question:
We do a lot of grilling at our campsite, and Ive never been a big fan of using lighter fluid, especially when were cooking burgers or steaks. I came across the Ivation Quick Ignite Electric Charcoal Starter VT79ZR and thought it might be a nice alternative. Does it really get the charcoal going in about 8 minutes, or do you still have to wait a while before you can start cooking? We usually have electricity at our campsite, so Im curious how well this would work for our weekend trips.

Hey Daniel! Yes, the Ivation Quick Ignite Electric Charcoal Starter # VT79ZR is a great way to get your charcoal going without messing with lighter fluid, especially since you already have electricity at your campsite. It uses a 500 watt heating element with a wide double ring design that heats more briquettes at once, and it can get your charcoal ignited in about 8 minutes. Just keep in mind that's the time to get the coals started, not necessarily when they're ready for cooking. You'll still want to give them time to develop that nice coating of gray ash before throwing your burgers or steaks on the grill.
I also like that Ivation thought about keeping your hands away from the heat. The angled handle gives you a little extra distance, and the support plate rests on the edge of your grill so you don't have to stand there holding it while the coals heat up. Just make sure you have a safe, heat resistant spot to set the starter while it cools down afterward.
Are you usually grilling on a portable charcoal grill at your campsite or bringing along a full size one?
