Trailer Hitch and 4-Way Wiring for a 2017 Jeep Patriot

Updated 10/26/2026 | Published 10/22/2026

Question:

Hi! I want to put a hitch on my car. The first suggestion that came up for the make and model of my car, 2017 Jeep Patriot, was the “etrailer trailer hitch receiver-custom fit- matte black finish-class III-2”-e98836.” What is the wiring I should get with that to pull a trailer? Thank you!

Hey Abigail.

You are correct with your hitch choice, # e98836 is a confirmed fit for your Patriot and will allow your Jeep to tow as much as the vehicle can handle (2,000lb tow & 200lb tongue with tow package, and 1,000lb tow & 100lb tongue without tow package). I recommend checking if you have the factory tow package on yours because this will decide what your towing capacity is ultimately. Now, when it comes to the wiring this choice is easy since we only have one confirmed fit. The # C56333 provides you with a 4-pole flat trailer connector to power your running lights, brake lights, and turn signals. You'll need to plug the Curt into factory connectors behind both taillights, attach your ground wire to bare metal, and run a power wire up to your battery. You will not need to cut or splice any wire here which it great. Just an FYI, this harness does not power electric trailer brakes, but with your Patriot only towing 2,000lbs with the factory tow package we won't be worrying about that.

What do you plan on hauling?

@AbigailG Happy to help, Abby. Just a heads up, that uhaul trailer weighs roughly 1,900lbs empty. The 5x8 is only 900lbs empty and stays under your 2,000lb limit (with factory tow) when fully loaded, just an FYI :)
