How Much Clearance Is Needed Above an RV Slide for a Slide Topper?

Updated 09/09/2026 | Published 09/04/2026

Question:

When the slide is closed, how much space is required between the roof gutter rail and the top slide flange ? I cant find an answer to this. I also have awning arms on both sides of the slide out.

Hey Dennis, thanks for reaching out. If you’re asking because you want to add a slide topper, for a Solera setup you'll want at least 3" of vertical space between the top slide flange/T-molding and the awning rail, with 3" to 6" being the normal installation range. Less than 3" generally does not give the topper enough room or the proper angle for drainage.

The awning arms on each side are just as important. You need enough horizontal clearance for the topper brackets and roller hardware without contacting those arms. For Solera applications with an existing patio awning, 3" of side-to-side clearance from the slide flange to the awning arm is the minimum I use.

What is the flange-to-flange width of your slideout? Also, what is the vertical measurement from the top slide flange to the bottom of the gutter?

The flange to gutter rail is only 2 7/8" and flange to awning arm is 4 1/2". The main reason for looking at a topper is to reduce the pounding rain noise. The same reason I'm looking at a shade for the skylight in the shower. I might try the 24x24 interlocking foam floor panels on top of the slides and take them off when we go home on Sundays. I wanted the topper to have full coverage and it looks like I can't do that in the space I have.

@DennisG Yea it sounds like the available space will be too tight to properly install a slide topper awning. Foam floor panels aren't a bad idea though. Definitely worth a shot, just don't forget they're up there! Let me know how it goes!

Since I am seasonal, the slides only go in on October 15. I put stickers on the control panel switches as reminders as well as on a season closing master sheet posted on the inside door. I'm only worried about water trapped under the foam tiles or them blowing off. Thanks for the help.
