What is the Most Cost Effective Class 3 Hitch You Have for my Special Project?

Updated 08/06/2026 | Published 08/03/2026

Question:

Hi, I have bought a few hitches from you guys over the years. this time I have a special project. I have built my own 1974 VW Thing onto a 2022 Chevy Bolt EUV and I am looking to ad a hitch to it. I will have to heavily modify it to work so I am just looking for your cheapest class III hitch. Yes it has the Bolt rear bumper attachment point but those points are at the very back of the thing now so regular Bolt hitch would stick way out. what I want to do is make my own brackets and weld to a cheap class III hitch. thanks for your time. Hello Harold,

That has to be one of the more unique projects I've heard of! I'd love to see a picture of the finished VW Thing/Bolt when it's done.

Since you're planning to fabricate your own mounting brackets and modify the hitch anyway, I'd actually recommend starting with the CURT Multi-Fit Trailer Hitch Receiver # C13900. It's a universal Class III hitch that's designed to be adapted to custom applications, so it makes a lot more sense than cutting up a vehicle-specific hitch.

If you're set on starting with a custom-fit hitch, the least expensive Class III option we currently have is the etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver # e83ZR. Just keep in mind that it's engineered to fit a specific vehicle, so you'll likely end up cutting off most of the mounting brackets anyway.

* I must add, that the modification of any hitch would void the warranty.

I must see this car that you are building, can you please respond directly to the email you receive with a picture? What made you start this project?
