Best V-Shaped Kayak Carrier For Carrying A 75 Pound Fishing Kayak On A Malone MicroSport Trailer

Question:

Im looking for V-shaped kayak holders to install onto my Malone MicroSport Kayak trailer. Fishing kayak is 12 long weighing roughly 75lbs. What can you recommend?

Hi Mike!

With your fishing kayak being 75 pounds, I think the Malone MegaWing Fishing Kayak Roof Rack w/ Tie-Downs - Saddle Style - Clamp On # MPG207 is going to be your best option. This has 150 pounds of capacity and will definitely handle you fishing kayak. It's also the widest one we currently have, making it an excellent choice for sit-on-top and or fishing kayaks. Plus it fits on this style trailer really well (see included image) with a pretty minimal amount of effort for the install.

My family purchased a Malone Megasport 3-Tier Outfitter trailer and converted it into a 2 tier for carrying 4 fishing kayaks with weights between 65 to 75 pounds each. All 4 kayaks are secured on Malone MegaWing racks that are clamped to the trailer's crossbars. After 4000 miles we have never encountered an issue during transport on Michigan roads, boats stay securely tied down. We can highly recommend the MegaWings, best decision for our application.

The lower crossbars carry 2 Crescent LTII fishing kayaks and the upper bars carry a pair of Crescent CK1's. We added optional Malone storage boxes front and rear and decked the open A-frame forward of the front crossbars to carry a 65qt cooler. Loaded for week-long trips this set-up pulls incredibly well behind our 2022 Ford Bronco.

@Marv Cool kayaks! I've seen the Crescent fishing kayaks before and they look to be highly useable for fishing expeditions. Some day I will get out on one of those. There are a lot of good lakes for that kind of thing out here in Missouri. Good call with the additional decks as well! Definitely makes loading the trailer up a lot easier! I completely agree with Mike. Another benefit is just sliding your kayak straight on without rotating like with a J style. I keep more stuff in my kayak transporting this way, faster to unload and get in the water

@DougB Indeed! Not having to turn the kayak on it's side is definitely a big benefit to the MegaWing and why they are my go to for anyone with fishing kayaks. What kind of fishing kayak do you have?

I bought two sets of the Malone MegaWing Kayak Roof Rack last year and I have been very happy with them. I drive a 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser and it is much taller than the SUVs I have driven in the past. This made it very difficult to get a couple of Wilderness Experience Pungos on top of my vehicle. At 5'9" tall I couldn't get the kayaks up and onto my Yakima JayLow kayak carrier like I had been doing for years. I decided to try the MegaWing and it not only worked, it has made loading and unloading my kayaks far easier. Instead of throwing my kayaks up from the side of my SUV it is far easier to load up from the rear by propping up the front end onto the carrier and then sliding the rest of the kayak forward. It's much easier to load kayaks this way with less strain on my back and less danger of scratching the paint on my car. I am approaching 70 years old and I should be able to load my kayaks by myself for as long as I have the strength to paddle. The MegaWings are very sturdy and do a great job of holding my kayaks with no movement. They are easy to install. They also look pretty cool on top of the vehicle and help me to spot my car in a crowded parking lot. I highly recommend them.

@LarryL Glad to hear they are so much easier to load than your JayLow carriers were! Yakima makes some dang good stuff, but Malone definitely has the upper hand with these! ^___^ And thanks for mentioning what kind of kayaks you have! I'm always curious what people are using as I did a little kayaking in my youth, but I didn't really get into it at the time. Always looking for a new hobby now though! Where do you typically take it out?

Lazer, Thank you for your reply and the info. My kayak is a 12’ Brooklyn. I take it out on the inland lakes of the upper peninsula.
