Question:
we have a 2 or 3 year old yakima sky box. we need a 2nd key made we do still have one of the originals. how is this done, do you need a serial number? i see a cut key can be ordered, but that it works on everyones box? that doesnt seem very thief-proof. we do not want to order a blank because we have already had bad luck with local key cutters using others blanks. please advise.

On one of your original keys there will be a number engraved into it. In order to order a replacement key you will need to search the part number Y8772-XXXX where the X's equals your key number. There are a ton of different key numbers so no, thieves would not easily be able to open your box unless they had your specific key.
For example, the # Y8772-A136 that you referenced would replace a key with the number A136 engraved on it.
I attached a link to a page that has all of the replacement Yakima keys we offer.
