Can I use Two Hitch Mounted Accessories on a Dual Hitch Adapter

Question:

Can this hitch be used for two accessories? For example a cargo box in the bottom receiver and an e-bike carrier in the upper receiver?

Unfortunately, the Roadmaster Dual Hitch Receiver Adapter # RM68BQ isn’t going to work for running two different hitch mounted accessories like a cargo box and a bike rack. With the cargo box on the lower receiver, the bike rack on top typically won’t have enough clearance to sit properly above it.

You might be able to make something like the Gen-Y Adjustable Mount # 325-GH-226 work, but I’d want to get a little more detail first. The exact cargo box and bike rack you’re using will make a big difference in how everything lines up.

Do you already have both of those, or are you still in the planning stage?

Also, what vehicle are you planning to mount this on, and do you know the height from the bottom of the hitch to the ground?

We have a Ram Promaster 3500 base for a Roadtrek camper van. There is no external storage. We have a Thule EasyFold XT bike rack for our e-bikes, and want to combine that with a storage box. We want to be able to use both the cargo box and the e-bike rack at the same time

@SandraA The Thule EasyFold # TH903202 has about an 11" rise from the center of the hitch pin hole to the bottom of the rack. I took a look at pairing that with a cargo carrier like the Inno Cargo Carrier # IN94MR. Even if you mounted that on the lower receiver of the Gen-Y Adjustable # 325-GH-226, there still wouldn’t be enough clearance for the bike rack to sit above it. You’d need several more inches of space to safely clear the box, especially to account for movement when hitting bumps in the road. Yakima does offer a modular setup with the EXO system # Y34ZR, but it won’t work with your EasyFold rack. The compatible bike rack for that system is only rated for two bikes up to 40 lbs each, so it may not meet your needs. A better option would be something like the etrailer Cargo Carrier # e98874. It’s not enclosed, but it doesn’t have any built-in rise, which helps with clearance. You could pair it with the Cargo Carrier Bag # 988501 to keep your gear covered and protected. The last thing to keep in mind is total weight. Your bike rack is 45 lbs, the Gen-Y is another 45 lbs, and the etrailer cargo carrier is 48 lbs. On top of that, you’ll need to factor in the weight of your bikes and whatever gear you plan to carry.
