Does Something Need to Be Put Between Hitch and Vehicle Frame

Updated 04/29/2026 | Published 04/27/2026

Question:

I have a used trailer hitch in great condition. Going on a 1990 Jeep XJ Cherokee. Do you have a recommendation what to put between the vehicle frame and hitch to keep water out for rust prevention? Or just paint and bolt on? Thank You.

Hey Ken, great question but I would just make sure the paint on the hitch is in decent shape and just bolt it up! If there are chips or exposed metal I would spray them with black spray paint to cover them.

Thank you. Just concerned about water getting trapped and rusting the metal. Ken

@KenZ that generally doesn't happen. Or not enough for it to be an issue unless you live in like a super salty winter area and are on the road in the salt a lot. Even then its still not super common.

You could do a coat of Rust Bullet. It will inhibit rust, and also stops it dead in his tracks better than Rust-Oleum.

@Mekanic good idea! I've used some rust reformer type paint in past and had decent results.
