Is It Better To Replace RV AC Unit Or Replace Entire System With Thermostat?

Published 04/27/2026

Question:

My travel trailer is about 10 years old and the AC finally quit. Can I just replace the rooftop unit, or is it smarter to replace the whole system at this point?

Hey Mark, at around 10 years old, I’d usually recommend replacing the whole system instead of just the rooftop unit. These newer AC kits use R32 refrigerant, and the newer AC parts aren’t backward compatible with older systems, plus replacement parts for the older refrigerant setups are getting harder to find.

If your trailer has a ducted setup with ceiling vents throughout the coach, a complete system like the Roughneck Mach 3 # CM95RR or Roughneck Mach 15 # CM65RR is the cleaner long-term fix. Mark, if you want, tell me your trailer model and whether your current AC feeds ceiling vents throughout, and I’ll help you narrow down the right one.

If you actually had a ductless setup and no vents in the ceiling, then you'd instead want the ductless kits like Mach 3 # CM68RR or Mach 15 # CM88RR.
