How Do I Know If My RV Has Ducted Or Ductless Air Conditioner System? Which New Coleman Unit Fits?

Question:
I’m replacing an older rooftop AC and really don’t want to order the wrong thing. I keep seeing “ducted” and “ductless,” and I’m not sure people always explain that very well. If I buy one of these Coleman systems, what exactly does ducted mean, and what comes in the box? I like the new coleman units. I do think I have vents in my ceiling..

Hey Jared, that’s a really smart question because “ducted” and “ductless” gets tossed around a lot. In plain English, ducted means the AC feeds cooled air into ceiling ductwork that carries that air to vents throughout the RV. Ductless means the air blows right out of the inside ceiling assembly at the AC itself instead of traveling through ceiling ducts.
A quick check is to look around your ceiling. Since you said you have several vents throughout the RV ceiling, you’re ducted. If there was just the main ceiling assembly and that’s where the air comes from, you would be ductless. That’s an important distinction here because the Signature Mach 15 # CM52RR, Roughneck Mach 15 # CM65RR, Signature Mach 3 # CM83RR, and Roughneck Mach 3 # CM95RR are all ducted systems. Rough neck versions hold up better for off-road and gravel roads where normal ac units can get damaged.
As for what comes in the box, these are complete systems. You get the rooftop AC, the ducted air distribution box, and the wall thermostat as a matched setup. The main optional add-on is the heat strip # CM96RR if you want light supplemental heat. Jared, if you want, tell me what your current AC setup looks like inside, and I can help you make sure you’re ordering the correct ducted version.
