Should I Replace OEM Transmission Cooler or Run It with Supplemental Cooler

Updated 03/19/2026 | Published 03/10/2026

Question:

Hi, I would like to know if I can run a aftermarket transmission cooler and bypass the factory cooler? Or should I run the factory inline with a aftermarket transmission cooler? The SUV is a 2004 Acura MDX Touring....Thanks.

Hey Ricky, to maximize the cooling of your transmission fluid it is best to run both the factory cooler and the auxiliary cooler at same time with the OEM cooler feeding into the aftermarket cooler like the part # D13504. Now with that said if your OEM cooler is broken or has a leak you can bypass it altogether with a cooler like this Derale. Is your OEM cooler still working?

Yes, The oem cooler still works. What auxiliary cooler would you recommend for a 04 Acura MDX? Thank you.

@Ricky with transmission coolers the bigger the better. If you can fit the # D13504 that would be what I would go with. You shouldn't have a problem fitting it but it measures 11" W x 12" T x 7/8" D and is an efficient design so it would work really well.
