Question:

I connected the two black wires one being the built in on/off switch to the blue and the white to the white. The light works but the built in on/off switch on the light itself is not working. How do I trouble shoot that

Hey, Tracy!

Happy to help! It sounds like the light may just be wired slightly off.

From the factory, the Gustafson RV Ceiling Light part # 277-000400-331 has two black wires that are connected together, those need to stay connected. The single loose black wire is the 12V power input, and the white wire is ground.

If those two factory black wires were separated or tied into power incorrectly, the built-in switch won’t work properly.

Here’s what to check:

- Make sure the two factory black wires are still connected together
- Connect the single remaining black wire to your 12V power (or wall switch output)
- Connect the white wire to ground

If you’re using a wall switch and the switch on the light, the wall switch will need to be ON first, and then the side button will be able to turn the light on and off. This would also go for the wall switch, the switch on the light will need to be turned to on and then you can use the wall switch to turn on and off the light. It would be similar to a ceiling fan where the wall switch has to be on first, and then you can use the pull chain to control the light or fan.

If you’d like, feel free to reply to the email with pictures showing how it’s currently wired and we can go from there.

Were you replacing or upgrading your previous light?
