Is Kats Oil Pan Heating Pad KH24500 Safe To Leave On For Several Hours?
Updated 02/10/2026 | Published 01/22/2026 >
Question:
Is the 500watt heater safe to use for several hours or will it burn the oil? Capacity is 6 quarts and it would be used when temps are below 0F. Would the 250watt be better for this amount of oil?

Hello Jace, thanks for reaching out. Yes, the Kat's Heaters Oil or Transmission Pan Heating Pad # KH24500 is built to be left on for several hours at a time, even overnight, without burning the oil or transmission fluid. It’s designed to gently warm the fluid, not overheat it, and runs well below temperatures that would cause damage. This is normal use for these pads, especially in colder climates.
The key is proper installation. Make sure the pad is fully bonded flat to a clean metal pan, with no air gaps, and not near exhaust components. As long as it’s installed correctly and not stacked with other heaters, you’re good to go. A lot of people run them on a timer, but it’s not required for safety.
The 500 watt is fine to use for 6 quarts. I would use whatever the largest pad is that will fit on the oil pan.

Hey Jace, how did the 500-watt heating pad work out for your oil pan in those below-zero temps? It’d be great to hear if it kept the oil warm without any issues. Your update could make it easier for others dealing with the same cold-weather setup.
