Can Zerostart Battery Heating Pad ZE27FR Be Installed Over An Existing Thermal Blanket?

Updated 02/10/2026 | Published 01/20/2026

Question:

My 2021 Ford 150 came from the manufacturer with a thermal material wrapped already around the existing battery. My question is can I place a zero start battery blanket heater over top of the already existing thermal blanket?

Hello James, good question, glad you asked.

No, you cannot place the Zerostart Battery Heating Pad # ZE27FR over an existing heating pad or thermal blanket. Doing that could cause hot spots to develop and the pad could overheat which would ruin the pad and could potentially damage your battery. You will need to remove the existing thermal blanket before installing the battery heating pad.

Also, it is important that the heating pad does not overlap on itself. This could also cause overheating. So its important to get a wrap that is sized perfectly or sized slightly smaller than the battery bank itself. The # ZE27FR is 72" long overall. According to my research the 2021 F150 uses a group 65 style battery, so the Zerostart Battery Heating Pad # ZE87FR (36" long) will be a better fit for that.

Is the current thermal blanket setup not cutting it? Is it something you can easily remove? Its been pretty frigid here in Missouri lately so if your weather is anything like ours keeping the battery heated is critical.

Hey James, how did things go after switching to the Zerostart battery heating pad sized for your F-150’s battery? Did removing the factory thermal wrap make a noticeable difference in how well it keeps your battery warm? Your update could help others facing the same cold-weather setup.
