How to Tell if Thule Motion 3 XXL Will Fit OEM Roof Rack on a 2023 Acura MDX

Updated 11/13/2025 | Published 10/24/2025

Question:

Will this Thule Motion 3 fit on a 2023 4th Generation Acura MDX AWD Tech Pkg with Factory Rails and Cross Bars? I have the front cross bar in the most forward position, and the spacing seems fine, but Im more concerned about hatch clearance. Im debating between this and the Yakima CBX XXL. I really like the cross bar clamp -in feature of the Thule over the Yakima, but the Yakima seems to have better hatch clearance. Do you have a recommendation?

Hey Mike, thanks for reaching out!

The Thule Motion 3 # TH59PN requires 54-3/4" from the front crossbar to the line where the roof and hatch meet for your 2023 Acura MDX hatch to open up without interference. I'm not sure what your measurement is, but if it's at least 54-3/4" then you're good to go!

If it's less than that, you'll need to use the Yakima CBX XXL # Y73QD instead. It has less clearance requirements and Yakima has confirmed it will fit with the OEM roof rack on your MDX.

Both boxes are great options, but I like the Yakima clamps better because the tightening knob removes once the claws are secured so the inside of the box is streamlined a bit more.

Let me know if the Thule box is long enough or not. I'd love to know either way!

Hey Mike, what did you find when you measured the distance from your front crossbar to the hatch on your MDX? Once you checked that spacing, did the Thule Motion 3 end up giving you enough clearance? Your results could really help others comparing these two cargo boxes.
