Question:
My daughter has 2017 Jeep Renegade with current setup of just a 4-way flat wiring and Class III hitch. She wants to tow a tear trailer that has 7 round setup and trailer brakes. Can you recommend easiest way for me to go from 4-flat to 7 round on the wiring end of things and also a good brake controller to install in her vehicle that will work.

Hi Paul!
Having the 4-flat on your daughter's 2017 Jeep Renegade will make upgrading to a 7-way easier as both of the kits I have listed below will piggyback off of it, so that's nice. : )
Hardwired Brake Controller:
etrailer Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller - 7-Way RV and 4-Way Flat - 10 Gauge Wires # ETBC7
Wireless Brake Controller:
etrailer 7-Way RV Upgrade Kit for Trailer Brake Controller Installation - 12 Gauge Wires # ETBC7L
The hardwired option will actually work for both types of controllers, but there is an extra wire that needs to be connected with it. I will say that these types of brake controllers are significantly better than wireless options, so this is the way I would go. I do have diagrams for both options attached as well.
If she does not have a brake controller picked out yet, I recommend the Tekonsha Voyager Trailer Brake Controller - 1 to 4 Axles - Proportional # 39510 for a basic and inexpensive option. It is reliable and easy to use, but you will need to cut the end off the wires to get it hardwired (alternatively, you can use the Brake Control Plug-In Harness # 20127 if you want it to be removeable).
If she is wanting a nicer option, I recommend the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller w/ Universal Wiring Harness - Dash Knob - Proportional # RED52VR. This is more expensive, but only the knob will be visible once the install is complete. The Voyager controller I mentioned previously will hang down into the footwell, which is why I prefer the Redarc controller (I'm 6'5" and tend to smack my knees into the controllers that hang in the footwell).
Does she have the trailer picked out yet?

Hey Paul, how did things go upgrading your daughter’s Jeep Renegade from the 4-flat to the 7-way wiring? Did the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty or the Tekonsha Voyager end up being the better fit for her setup? Your update could make it easier for others planning a similar tow setup.
