Recommended AC Unit for a Portable Construction Office

Updated 09/24/2025 | Published 09/13/2025

Question:

Hi, I am looking for a rooftop AC unit for an 8ftx8ft office that is on a spray trailer. People will be in and out of the office nearly every 5 minutes and there will be batteries charging on the floor adding heat. Power consumption is not an issue as it will have access to a 120v or 240v plug at 30 amps, so I was thinking about getting a 15k BTU unit to hopefully keep up. To my question, I plan on having a separate compartment with the power supplies for the battery chargers and was wondering what Ac unit would work the best with a small air duct to force air into the compartment and still work to cool the office. The unit also needs to have an air filter, so that I can put an activated charcoal screen on it to absorb spray vapors.

Hey Ryan. If you want to run a duct to a separate compartment you'll also need to run a duct to the main room your AC is going to be in. You can't duct off the air boxes on the AC's and leave them open it's one or the other. You could try to block off half of the AC opening but I can't guarantee you're going to get much air forced down the duct.

For a ducted or ductless setup, I recommend the Advent Air RV Air Conditioner System item # ADV62SR in black or item # ADV92SR in white. These kits come with a AC unit, an air distribution box, a start capacitor, and a removable air filter.

Do you already have a cutout for an AC and is your roof capable of supporting one? These setups weigh right around 75 lbs.

Hi Jerred, thanks for the information. Theres currently no hole for a unit and the roof is overbuilt so people can walk over it if need be. I may try to block half the opening as the compartment will have negative pressure due to cooling fans venting outside, so my theory is with the positive pressure from the unit's fan there will be enough air flow to keep the electronics cool. I didn't know if there was a way to have a duct and still have the unit be "ductless" into the main room, but I believe you answered that question.

@RyanK You're welcome! Happy to help. Definitely sounds like the roof is capable. Let me know if you have any additional questions.
