Will a Nautic Stack Kayak Roof Rack Work w/ a Yakima Skybox on the Same Roof Rack?

Updated 08/07/2025 | Published 07/13/2025

Question:

Hello, I have a 2010 Mazda5 with 48inch Rhino Rack vortex crossbars. We have an old Yakima Skybox approx 26inch wide and want to be able to carry both a sit on kayak and an SUP next to it. If we move the Skybox a little more to the drivers side, would the Nautic Stack Kayak Rack be appropriate and fit to carry both a kayak and SUP? If not, do you see a way to squeeze this all on top of the car? Thanks for the info!

Hey Ariele, welcome back! That set up should work but it's going to depend entirely on how big the bottom of your kayak is. You'll need to push your Skybox over as far as you possibly can to give yourself enough room to mount the Rhino-Rack Nautic Stack Kayak Roof Rack w/ Tie-Downs item # RRS520 and your kayak.

Please note your Rhino-Rack Vortex Aero Crossbars like item # RRVA118B-2 have a 165 lbs weight capacity so you definitely want to avoid overloading them. You may also want to check your Mazda's roof capacity as it may be lower and you'll want to go off of that number if it is.

How deep is the bottom of your kayak and how much does it weigh?

Hey Ariele, how did it go with fitting the kayak and SUP alongside your Skybox? I'm curious to know if the Nautic Stack Kayak Rack worked out for you. Your experience could really help others trying to make the most of their roof space!
