Recommended Supplemental AC Unit for 1996 Holiday Rambler

Updated 06/28/2025 | Published 06/18/2025

Question:

I’m looking for your help with my RV’s air conditioning system. I have a 1996 35-foot Holiday Rambler that’s stationary on my hunting lease in South Texas. It currently has a relatively new ducted air conditioner, but in the extreme summer heat—even with a cover over the RV—it struggles to keep the interior cool. I’m considering adding a second air conditioning unit in the rear of the RV, using the existing standard 14”x14” roof vent opening. I plan to wire it separately from the main system, so I’m looking for a unit that is fully ceiling-controlled no wall thermostat required. My goal is to use it as a supplemental system that I can manually switch on when the primary ducted unit isn’t keeping up. Can you recommend a suitable ceiling-controlled unit for this purpose? I’d appreciate any guidance you can offer on product options and installation considerations. Thanks in advance for your help. Best regards, Mike Greathouse

Hey Mike! Since it is a supplemental AC and doesn't need to cool the whole thing a 13,500 Btu unit will work well. You can use the Advent Air RV Air Conditioner System # ADV23SR.

This comes with a manual air distribution box so you won't have to run any extra wiring for a thermostat. It is also a new R32 refrigerant units so you won't have to worry about parts being available down the line now that the R410 units are no longer in production. This does come with a start capacitor but you're looking at 15 amps while it is running so that is something to keep in mind depending on how your trailer is setup.

If you want something with a lower power draw the Furrion Chill Cube # FR59TD is another option. This has a variable speed compressor that slowly ramps up so it is incredibly efficient and has no initial power spike. Even though it is an 18k Btu unit the cooling power draw is 11.6 amps. Realistically this could completely cool your trailer on its own without the AC you currently have.

What kind of hunting are you doing down there in Texas?

Thanks, I will look into these options further. I’m not worried too much about the power draw, I’ll run a separate circuit not connected through the RV to the new AC. I appreciate your response. Mike
