Troubleshooting Aggressive Braking and Only Red Light on Pro Series Pilot Trailer Brake Controller

My Reese brake control only lights up red dot when braking with trailer hooked up. Also trailer is braking very aggressive...I turned the gain down and I didnt help...any suggestions?

Hi Matt; is this the Pro Series Pilot Trailer Brake Controller # 80550? Assuming it is, the red dot alone indicates that a trailer is not connected. You should also have a "c" on there with the trailer connected. That also probably means there is some kind of internal issue with the brake controller if the brakes are working even though it thinks a trailer isn't connected.
I would double check the connections on the brake controller, test the brake output circuit on the 7-way, make sure ground connections are secure, and inspect your connectors for corrosion or damage. If everything checks out it is likely the controller and replacing it would be your best option. If you go that route, I recommend upgrading to a more reliable, proportional brake controller like the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195.
