Replacement Landing Gear for Atwood Set that is on 1998 Jayco

Updated 11/03/2025 | Published 02/27/2025

Question:

Ok I have a Atwood land gear that needs replaced on 98 Jayco. The bevel gears in the legs are worn out. It has the 75721 electric motor and 71320 gear box. The legs are also welded to plates that bolt to the trailer frame not U shaped mounts with pins Reading all the Questions it look like I can order a Manuel crank landing gear and reuse my electric motor. Am I correct or should I order one with a electric motor and call it a day. I would be cutting the old jacks off the mounting plates and welding those U shaped clips on to hold the new jacks if that makes difference in the model I order.

Hey Brian, I would recommend just starting totally over with a new landing gear set like the Stromberg Carlson part # LG-1. At one point there was some confusion on whether or not the Atwood landing gear components were interchangeable with the other brands like Lippert, LCI, Venture, Stromberg etc. so while your old motor MIGHT work there's a big enough risk it wouldn't that I wouldn't go that route. This also gives you all new components so wouldn't have to worry about having to replace a motor down the line.

This comes with the needed brackets you'll want to weld to your trailer as well so it's everything you'd need.

Hey Brian, how did things turn out with the new Stromberg Carlson landing gear setup on your Jayco? Did the new brackets and full replacement make the job easier in the end? Your update could make it easier for others facing the same worn Atwood gear issue.

@JamesonC The old gear the jacks were welded to mounting plates that bolted to the inside of the frame To use the new mounting clamps I had to cut 3/8 thick 6 inch wide plates. The old jacks spacing up and down was wider. So the new clamps were welded on a couple inch lower than bolt holes and the clamps are weld on the one side vs the ends. I also installed the lower clamp above the punch out of the jack body and just tacked small piece of steel to the tube so the jack can not slide down. this way the lifting force is on both punch out vs just the top one. Using the clamps also use up a tiny amount of space and I had to move the twin propane tanks over about a 1/4 "inch by reinstalling the thread rod for the tank hold down clamp enough for the tank to clear.
