Will the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver Hit the Bumper When Installed on a 2004 Volkswagen Jetta Wagon

Updated 11/07/2025 | Published 01/05/2025

Question:

If the receiver is installed as recommended on my 2004 Jetta Wagon, what is the distance from the center of the pin hole to the outermost point of the bumper? I need to convert the 1.25inch receiver to a 2inch for my bike rack, so was considering the Trailer Hitch Adapter - 1-1/4inch to 2inch Hitch part e93YR, but dont know if it is going to contact the bumper or not when installed.

Hey Jason, we don't have those specs unfortunately, but I was able to track down some specs and it looks like this hitch measures 18" long, so I'd say paired with the Trailer Hitch Adapter # e93YR you should be fine and shouldn't contact the bumper.

Hey Jason, did the hitch and adapter setup clear the bumper on your Jetta Wagon like we expected? Knowing how that spacing worked out could really help others planning a similar bike rack setup.

@JesseM The receiver installation is perfect. The adapter, though, required me to do some modification. It came out really clean, but I had to cut a bit of the bumper cover to get the adapter to fit in the upright position. Yes, it's a permanent mod, but I don't plan to sell the car, and it actually looks really good.

@JasonA That’s great to hear, Jason! Sounds like you really made the setup work perfectly for your Jetta. A little bumper trimming can be worth it when it fits clean and looks good in the end. Glad the install turned out solid. Have you had a chance to test it out with your bike rack yet?

@JesseM Bike rack is on it all the time. The adapter is a little loose, and bolt on stabilizers don't fit in the tight space under the bumper, so I added shims in the receiver to keep it tight. Very little movement as a result. The height of the 2" adapter is perfect for bike rack accessibility and it keeps it from dragging on the ground when going through dips.
