Can Reese Hitch Cargo Carrier Safely Hold Generator and Camping Gear

Updated 12/15/2025 | Published 11/25/2024

Question:

On the Reese carrier, would I be able to load a generator AND some camping gear onto it. Will it and my vehicle be able to safely support the weight?

Hey Lori! I'm not sure what size generator you have, but assuming it's one you plan on powering more than a phone charger with, I can ballpark a weight of around 100-150 pounds. Even with a large generator like that, this still leaves 300+ pounds of capacity to work with on the carrier for your camping gear. Exceeding the 500 pound weight capacity on the Reese # RP87KR isn't really a concern.

If I'm being honest, it's really difficult to actually load up 500 pounds onto a carrier. That's a lot of stuff. The real question is whether or not that much weight is going to tilt the carrier down to the ground or make you question the safety for a longer car trip. And my real answer is that I've messed around with this particular carrier a bit and I can tell you it's extremely well built and designed for exactly the kind of thing you're wanting to do. I can say with confidence that the carrier can safely support your gear. A typical campsite generator plus whatever camping gear still fits within the leftover space is going to be just fine.

If you have any other questions about this or another carrier we have to offer, just let me know. I'd recommend this Reese model though without hesitance.

Hey Lori, how did things go when you loaded your generator and camping gear onto the Reese carrier? It’d be great to hear if the weight balance and stability worked out as expected. Your update could make it easier for others planning a similar setup.
