Upgraded Inverter for 2020 Ford F-150 to Run Heavy Duty Air Compressor

Updated 11/26/2024 | Published 11/25/2024

Question:

I want to upgrade a 400-watt inverter on my 2020 F150 to 1000-watt to run a small air compressor to re-inflate my tires after off-roading on the sand. The air compressor is rated at 2.8 amps at 120V.

Hello Dan.

You are definitely looking at the right part. The Wagan Mobile Power Inverter - AC Outlet and USB Port - 1,000 Watts # WC3720 is the best option that we have for getting the job done. If your air compressor is 2.8 amps at 120V then it takes 336 Watts to run. When the Wagan Mobile Power Inverter is operating at full capacity will draw approximately 83 amps from your 12-volt system, and with the common battery for the F150 rated between 850 and 950 cold cranking amps, you will be able to power up this inverter and use your air compressor with ease.

I have also included an install video, it's the older model and the install is on a 2011 Honda Pilot, but if you are looking to mount the unit inside the vehicle it is a good video to reference on how to get the job done.

@Dan No, that is not necessary. The 2020 F-150 has at least a 200 watt alternator (some trims are even more), the Inverter is going to pull 83 amps, so your alternator can get the job done no problem.
