Question:
With trailer disconnected I have a red dot on display when brake pedal is pressed but not when the manual lever is used.

Just got off the phone with my contact at Draw-Tite, he tested their Activator IV and found that the dot will show up without a trailer connected and the manual override activated. He said the problem could be that your manual override lever is bad (maybe try sliding it a few times to clean the contacts). The other possibility is that the ground circuit of the controller isn't making a good contact. I would check the condition of the ground wire and make sure it's connected to a clean metal surface.
