Question:

Do you have any videos or specific instructions for adding a brake controller and 7pin trailer plug to a 2004 Lincoln navigator with a bad flat 4 pin plug?

No, we do not I am sorry. However, if your 2004 Navigator came from the factory with that 4-Way it'll be pretty easy to add a 7-Way connector. Somewhere close behind where your 4-Way is mounted will be a circular connector called the USCAR. It will look like the connector at the end of the 7-way Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness for Factory Tow Package item # C55774. You'll simply be able to disconnect your broken 4-Way and add in this 7-Way connector.

If you do not have this connector, then you do not have the tow package and you'll need to replace the 4-Way first before you can add a 7-Way. You would want the Hopkins Plug-In Simple Vehicle Wiring Harness item # HM11140495. This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your Lincoln's wiring harness, which is located behind the tail lights.

The second harness you will need is the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller item # ETBC7. The kit includes a pre-wired 7- and 4-way trailer connector that mounts easily at the rear of your Navigator with an included bracket. This kit is designed for use on a vehicle with an existing 4-way flat trailer connector and plugs directly into it.

You will then connect the blue wire to the blue wire on the brake controller, connect the black wire to the positive post on the vehicle's battery, the white wire to ground, and the yellow wire to vehicle's reverse circuit if applicable. This will provide you with the ability to control your trailer's brakes and also provide you with a 12v power wire for you trailer's accessory lights.

As far as a brake controller goes if you have the factory 4-way connector it's going to be pretty easy to install one. I recommend the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller w/ Custom Harness item # RED96CR. This is a proportional brake controller that activates your trailer's brakes when your Navigator decelerates.

The reason the Tow-Pro Liberty is the best option is because of its unique installation method where the only visible portion is the control knob that's about the size of a nickel. The main unit is hidden away inside your dash to be completely out of the way and out of sight.

The included adapter is plug and play so you'll just need to locate the wiring harness beneath your dash. Please note that this adapter will only work if you have the factory towing package. The towing package does include a 4-way connector with the USCAR connector.

If you do not have the towing package, I still recommend the Tow-Pro Liberty but you'll need to use the one that does not come with the plug in adapter item # RED24FR. To complete the install you'll also need the Universal Wiring Harness for Redarc Tow-Pro Trailer Brake Controllers item # RED69FR.

Hey, how did things go adding the brake controller and 7-way plug to your Navigator? Were you able to locate the USCAR connector behind the old 4-way plug? Knowing what worked could help others upgrading their wiring setup too.
