Troubleshooting Inside Wear on Trailer Tire Tread

Updated 02/04/2026 | Published 07/26/2024

Question:

I have a tri-axel toy hauler. My front passenger tire is wearing bald on the inside of the tire. The other 5 tires seem to be doing fine. What could be causing this?

Thanks for reaching out, Matt!

If both tires on the same axle have that inside wear then we could maybe chalk it up to the axle being overloaded, but since it's only for 1 tire it leads me to believe that something is going on with the hub and how it sits in relation to your axle and the ground.

I recommend pulling the tire and hub to check and make sure all of your bearings are good and that the hub itself isn't damaged. If everything looks good to you then it would be beneficial to have a local trailer shop take a look as well just to make sure.

Hey Matt, did you get a chance to check the hub and bearings on that front passenger tire? I'm curious if you found any damage or if a shop confirmed what was causing the uneven wear. Your update could make it easier for others with similar toy haulers to track down the issue.

@LazerS I took it to my purchasing dealership as it was still under warranty. They replaced front and middle axels but not the rear and didn’t know what the issues were. Lippert wouldn’t tell them. Lippert needed all kinds of measurements, from the axel spacing, corner to corner, alignment, to height, to spring load, if they were bent and the spacing on the floating garage floor. Not sure how they check for that. But they were checking to see if I overloaded with toys but I never even had bikes or UTV’s back there yet. Sorry I don’t have a real answer. Wish I did. Only thing I know now is it seems like the tire/tires aren’t burning away. As far as I can tell.

@MattS Weird tire wear is typically caused by overloading, so I get why they wanted to make sure that wasn't what was going on. I think in your case though, there was actually something wrong with the axle itself. But I'm glad they got everything squared away! Let us know if there is anything else we can help with! : )
