Updated 07/12/2024 | Published 06/19/2024

Question:

I have a 2024 highland open range with the rhino pin box and am looking for a sidewinder to use with my Ram mega cab short bed. Is there one that will for the bolt patter?

Hey Ryan,

Indeed there is a Sidewinder that has the correct bolt pattern to replace your Lippert Rhino pin box. I went ahead and verified directly with the manufacturer for you that the correct replacement is the following:

- Reese Sidewinder 5th Wheel King Pin with Rotating Turret # RP34FR

The # RP34FR has a 20,000 lb capacity, and the Open Range 5th wheels each have a GVWR well under that so you won't have any issue with fit or strength, so it's the perfect option to tow with your Ram short bed.

Thank you Kyle. After towing with the rhino box to bring the trailer home, I am not convinced I actually need a sidewinder for this RV. I am only lacking about 2 inches to completeing a 90 degree turn with my mega cab Ram. Is there another pin box would fit this unit and has a couple of inches of forward placement of the pin compared to the stock rhino box? I would especially be interested in one that provides some cushion. Ryan

@RyanB So there isn't one that is a couple inches longer than the stock Rhino, with the only longer option being the Curt Flex Air 5th Wheel Pin Box - Lippert Rhino # LC65VR which will add just about an inch of length. So you'll get some slight added clearance, but I just couldn't tell you if it will allow you to make a full 90 degree turn. The only way I can confidently say you will be able to do that is with the Sidewinder # RP34FR, so that's honestly the route I'd go.

@KyleS I received this sidewinder but am worried that I need a spacer kit? The Sidewinder is 11 7/8in wide but it seems my factory pin box frame is 12in on the inside. From what I had read there are only spacer kits for 12.5in wide pin box frames. Is it just expected that this little bit of gap will suck closed then tightened? Thank you.
