Question:
Hi guys, in need of some guidance. Last year, while driving to the lake, my Sea Doo trailer popped off the ball when we hit some unexpected construction. Yes, I checked it before I left - even tried to lift it up to remove it after it was locked - nothing happened.. So there is a backup system or anything you could recommend to stop that from happening again?

James, there could be a number of reasons why the coupler decided to unlatch itself but it's probably due to a worn out latching mechanism in the coupler. To make sure it does not happen again, I'd suggest either replacing the latch or the entire coupler with a new one.
If you want to replace the entire coupler, a coupler that has a locking collar like the Bulldog Collar-Lok Coupler # BD028288. This would be ideal since the built in collar would slide up and secure the jaws of the coupler in place over the trailer ball, and then gets locked in place with a safety pin. This way the only way the coupler would come detached is if the safety pin went missing.
If you want to just replace the latch, let me know what coupler you have and I can take a look to see if we have any replacement parts.
