Kia Dealer Installed Trailer Harness and Is Now Malfunctioning

The KIA dealer installed a hitch and harness when I bought the vehicle. The converter seems to have a problem - no tail light power at the connector - I traced it back brown wire and there is power into but not out of the converter box - also left turn signal - there is power at the connector to trailer but when I connect the cable the turn signal light does not work. I changed the bulbs - used a test light at the turn signal connection inside the trailer light and there is power - when I install the bulb there is no flash. Suspect the converter. I am going to purchase one if you can answer one question regarding the photo on the web site. Why are there two sets of leads coming out from the front of the converter box? The yellow set seems to be extra - my dealer installed harness looks exactly like the set of leads and two connectors on the top left side. But there is no yellow set. Why is the yellow set in the photo?

I would say either the dealer gave you a bad part, or the wrong part. The yellow wires should be attached to the driver side tail light to supply the driver side blinker signal. The other connector goes over to the passenger side tail light. On the passenger side, the red wire picks up brake light signal, brown wire picks up running/tail lights, green wire is the passenger side turn signal and the white wire is the ground.

I imagine the part the dealer installed is something similar to part # 118401 that will only work on 2005 - 2010, 6 Cylinder Sportage models with factory tow package harness. Part # 33925 should work on any 2005 - 2006 Sportage regardless of motor or equipment. If your 2008 model has a 4 cylinder engine a Upgraded Circuit Protected Taillight Converter Hardwire Kit, item # 119178KIT will need to be hardwired into the proper circuits at the rear of the vehicle, behind the tail lights. We have a video for you to review that details how to install this wiring harness, see link.

Let us know what you find out. Did the dealer not check to make sure the connector worked after they finished the install? Occasionally these converters do go bad, but if your connector only has the one side, I think they installed the wrong part. If it only has the one side, is that connected to the tail light or to a port underneath the vehicle?
