What is the purpose of the spacers under the airbag itself for 2wd models? Is it possible to not have that spacer installed?

The purpose of the spacer in the Firestone Ride-Rite Air Helper Springs # F2525 being required on 2WD model trucks is to lift the air bag to the proper height to reach the mounting bracket that is attached to the frame of the truck. Without installing the spacer the air bag would be stretched between the top and bottom mounting plates.
