Can this be upgraded to the 4 bike version or are they completely separate things?

The Kuat Piston Pro Bike Rack for 3 Bikes # KU38ZR cannot be used with another 1-Bike add-on so you'll either need to go with the 4-Bike version, part # KU58ZR, right off the bat, or you'll need to get the 2-Bike Add-On # KU26ZR to use when you need to carry 4 bikes.

We've seen modular bike racks in the past that let you add a single tray at a time and while the initial thought is a good idea, those racks would get way too heavy way too fast. So this system of either one tray or two trays is better overall.
