Weight Distribution Hitch Recommendation for a Casita Camper Trailer

Published 03/07/2014

Question:

The Casita has a less than simple hitch profile yet it has a low coupler height. TW of 3100 lbs, and hitch weight of about 350 lbs. It also has propane bottles in front. Not trying to trick you, I do not have a clue what hitch to use with my 2006 Tacoma. I believe these products are available in Canada.

Since your tongue weight is right at 350 lbs I would recommend going with the Reese SC Weight Distribution Hitch part # RP66540 which would be an excellent choice. This system uses trunnion bars which will give you better ground clearance when compared to a round bar setup.

To determine if your propane tanks will interfere you will need to measure 29 inches from the center of your coupler back on the trailer frame. Thats where the spring bar hangers will need to be installed, so if there is room above the frame at the 29 inch point then you will be fine, but if not then you will need to use the Chain Hangers part # RP58305 to install on the frame of your trailer.

In order to determine what rise/drop shank should be used you will need to check out the FAQ article I attached on the subject.

I also attached an FAQ article on weight distribution hitches for you to check out.

Weight distribution systems do not come with hitch ball. So if you need a 2 inch ball you would want part # A-90, or if you need a 2-5/16 inch ball you would want a part # 19286.
