A friend does not like his 2021 and want me to try it. I have a 2017. Can it be made to fit?

The BAK Flip F1 # BAK72331 that you referenced does fit 2017 to 2023 (as of right now Feb 2023) Ford F-250/320/450 long beds so the two years you mentioned would have same fit and would work great. You would not need to make any modifications either.
