As far as the mounting style on the Thule JawGrip # TH73NV, it comes with bolts that go into top crossbar channels. This is because it is a channel-mount style. It is important to note that if you have square crossbars, you need the additional adapter # TH34FR94BT. Even though I do not know what Smitty product you are referring to, the JawGrip does not come with locks, so you will need to disengage the carrier and lock them in your vehicle when not in use.
If you want a great option that allows for locks, I recommend the Yakima TopGrip Paddle, Shovel, or Axe Holder Brackets for Roof Rack Crossbars - Universal Mount # Y04086. This carrier fits handles with a diameter between 1-3/16" - 2". It also carries 1 paddle, shovel, axe, or straight handled item. For the locks, you need the addition Yakima Same-Key Lock Cores # Y07202 which lock the clamps to the crossbars. The clamps of the TopGrip fit crossbar systems as long as your crossbars do not exceed 3-1/8" wide x 1" tall. In order to make sure, I recommend measuring your crossbars.
