Why Is the Curt Hitch for a 2019 Toyota Camry Rated Class I

Question:

I have installed a few Curt hitches and they are built very strong. Can you explain why the Curt hitch is only rated a class I and can only handle 200lbs TW? It seems the weak link is not the strong, beefy hitches, but the sheet metal of the Camry it is mounted to.

You are right that the Curt Hitch part # C11576 is a class I hitch rated for 200 lbs of tongue weight. I am not an engineer so I can't say exactly why the hitches were given one rating over another, but it usually comes down to beefier metal and larger size hardware. That said, as you alluded to, the vehicle is the weak point. The hitch ratings are not tested with the vehicle so if the vehicle is rated lower than the hitch then that is the one you need to abide by. In other words, just because one has a higher rating does not mean you can tow/haul more weight. Hitch manufacturers usually match the hitch rating with the vehicle. The higher-class hitches like class 3 and class 4 are usually on the bigger SUV or trucks.
