Is Weight Distribution Needed for 2017 Ram 2500 with Dump Trailer

Published 11/05/2021

Question:

I have a 2017 6.7 Cummins Ram 2500 4x4, crew cab with a class V factory hitch. According to Ram, the hitch TW should not exceed 1,800 lbs. and the truck is capable of towing 17,200 when properly equipped. What set-up would I need to do conventional towing up to 16,000 lbs? My intent is to be able to utilize a ~16’ dump trailer capable of hauling up to 6 tons of materiel. Most dump trailers I am looking at are in the 4000 lb trailer range with the 6 ton payload putting me at a 16,000 lb gvwr for the trailer. Is the factory class V hitch sufficient? What set up would be recommended to do this? Would I need a WD hitch or would a pintle/ball combo such as a Curt 48012 be sufficient? Thank you!

I do have some great options for your 2017 Ram 2500 to help with towing but I don't really recommend using a weight distribution system on a dump trailer, there's usually not much space on the frame and the frame rails are usually rather large. This is all in addition to the ever changing tongue weight. Instead, I recommend a set of air bags since you can adjust the pressure inside for however much load you have on the trailer at any one given time. The Air Lift LoadLifter 7500 XL Air Helper Springs part # AL57589 in particular are what I recommend and I did an install video you can watch, attached below.

If the trailer has a lunette ring then the Curt Pintle Hook part # C48012 would work great but the Gen-Y Adjustable 2-Ball Mount part # 325-GH-1624 would be better since you can adjust the height to get the trailer level. I did a video on this as well which is attached below.
