Expert Reply:
The Draw-Tite Class I receiver you mentioned, part # 24827 is a vehicle-specific item that will fit a 2005-2010 Scion tC only.
To see the various hitches available for a 1997 Jeep Cherokee, click the provided link. I would recommend the Curt Class III receiver, part # 13160. A Class III receiver will allow you to maximize the towing capacity of your Cherokee. The more common 2 inch receiver size will also allow you a better selection of hitch accessories like bike racks or cargo carriers, if you should need these items in the future.
If you will be using the hitch for towing purposes, you might also need the following items:
Wiring harness with 4-pole trailer connector, part # 118354
Ball mount, part # C45010
Pin and Clip # C21500
2 inch trailer ball, part # 19247
1-7/8 inch trailer ball, part # 19260
I have linked you to the products I have recommended, as well as some installation videos that you might find helpful.
