Yes, you should be able to flat tow a 2002 Ford Ranger 4x4 with automatic transmission but as always, we suggest you reference your vehicle specific owners manual to ensure. Sometimes there may be a limitation to the maximum distance you can safely flat-tow. I do think you will be okay with the Ford Ranger 4x4 though, I think in neutral the transfer case will still oil components as needed. Again though, please check your specific vehicle manual against what trim package you have that may effect flat towing.
To safely flat-tow your 2002 Ford Ranger there are several needed components. You will need base plates, compatible tow bar with safety cables, lights for the towed vehicle and a supplemental braking system that is required by law.
I recommend Roadmaster Crossbar-Style Base Plate Kit - Removable Arms, # 477-1. These base plates are a confirmed fit to the 2002 Ford Ranger Edge with tow hooks. The crossbar-style hidden brackets attach to your Ford Ranger's frame to provide attachment points for your tow bar. The visible portions of the brackets can be removed when you are not towing.
The tow bar I recommend is Roadmaster Falcon 2 Tow Bar, # RM-520. This is a 6,000 lb. hitch mounted tow bar with telescoping arms that automatically lock into place. The large hookup radius allows you to connect without perfectly lining up your vehicle and easily folds up to store on your RV. Along with this, I suggest the RoadMaster Falcon 2 and Falcon All-Terrain Combo Towing Kit with Straight Wiring, # RM-9243-1. With this you get everything you need to tow with RoadMaster's Falcon 2 and Falcon All-Terrain system in one convenient kit. Includes wiring kit, power cord, mounting bracket, safety cables, padlocks, tow bar cover, and a vinyl bag to store it all.
The supplemental brake system I recommend is the Roadmaster Even Brake Portable System, part # RM-9400. This is a proportional brake system that requires no splicing or cutting into the Ford Ranger's wiring..
I have attached some helpful articles and videos about flat-towing you can check out.
