Does Rhino Rack Pioneer Platform Have Capacity for Roof Mounted Tent

Updated 05/04/2021 | Published 05/01/2021

Question:

Hi, we have a RhinoRack backbone installed in our 2018 Jeep JKU. Our plan is to mount a large rooftop tent with a weight range of 160 to 180 pounds, I initially planned on the pioneer platform 65 pounds however I see that RhinoRack only recommends about 180 pounds for off road dynamic weight. After subtracting 65 pounds this s my weight capacity too low for the tent. To reduce weight, should I consider the vortex or heavy duty cross bars instead? Thanks!

While the Rhino Rack Pioneer Platform with Backbone part # RR33QX has a dynamic weight rating that is lower than it would appear you need you should keep in mind that the static weight capacity would be high enough although this is rated with a static rating. Dynamic weight capacity is the capacity it could carry while on the road which will have bumps and dips which would exaggerate the weight on the rack. The static weight capacity is the amount of weight it could carry when not moving, which would be the situation with a roof mounted tent.
