For your 1997 Nissan Pathfinder I recommend the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2" # 13088 to pull a mid sized pop-up camper. The hitch has a 500lb maximum tongue weight capacity and a 5000lb towing capacity. It can be used with weight distribution. The tongue weight goes up to 600lbs and the trailer weight goes up to 6000lbs.
If you are going to be pulling a trailer you are going to need light functions. I recommend the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector Item # 118361. This kit is a simple plug in wiring harnes that provides a 4 pole plug to provide the proper light function on the trailer. It simply plugs in to the factory plugs behind each taillight.
