Question:
If the battery is dead, do I need to replace with an entire new breakaway kit or can I just replace the battery?

If you have a Hopkins Trailer Breakaway Kit like part # HM20001 then the battery can be replaced using the Breakaway Kit Replacement 12 V Battery part # HM20008.
