Recommended Weight Distribution with Sway Control For Lance Trailer

Updated 09/01/2020 | Published 08/31/2020

Question:

I have a 2020 used Lance 1995 trailer dry wt - 4265 GVWR 5700. Ball wt @ 390#. It came with a Curt 17063 hitch round bars with 2 5/16inch ball. I towed it home with a new F-150 Ford xlt 4wd crew w/5.5 bed with Max Tow pkg. The rv dealership set up my truck with that hitch came with the trailer from previous user. I watched the adjustments made by the technician had read through the installation manual for the Curt before I got there. so wasnt completely in the dark. Tow home 140 miles was in strong winds 15-20 mph, and sway was troublesome. I intend to replace the hitch with the friction sway control cant be bothered with the separate sway bar, which appeared to be ineffective. I am changing the hitch but suspect I may need to make adjustments to put more weight on the ball as well. I have tentatively ed the Fastaway E2 with Trunion bars and have tried using your web site for what size, etc. I would like to discuss the merits of too much capacity vs not enough. Cant explain why, but seem to favor the trunion bars vs the round bars. I am not hung up on Fastaway.

The Curt MV Weight Distribution System w/ Friction Sway Control - Round Bar - 14K GTW, 1.4K TW # C17063 is far too large a system for your trailer tongue weight and that may be part of the sway issue as that will make your trailer too rigid in its ride.

My recommendation for you is to use a system with integrated anti-sway that is rated for your tongue weight. You want to base your system off the total tongue weight which is your trailer's loaded tongue weight along with any cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. The tongue weight you gave is very light for your trailer as it should be at least 10% and often is closer to 15% of the total trailer weight. I recommend using the Fastway e2 Weight Distribution w/ 2-Point Sway Control - Trunnion - 6,000 lbs GTW, 600 lbs TW # FA92-00-0600 for your application for a basic system. If it were me, I'd go with the Strait-Line Weight Distribution w/ Sway Control - No Shank - Trunnion Bar - 10K GTW, 600 lbs TW # RP66072 with shank # RP54998. This is the best sway control system because of the dual cams. The trunnion bars will give you better ground clearance so that is the better option over round bars.
